December to Remember: How to Celebrate the Holidays in Alexandria and DC

As 2016 comes to a close, there’s one thing you MUST do in the month of December: celebrate. Whether you took a leap of faith and started your own business or you accepted that promotion in a brand new city, it’s time to reminisce and reward yourself for a successful year. Located minutes from both downtown Washington and the best attractions of Alexandria, e-lofts is a convenient home base from which to celebrate the season, from holiday markets and light shows to New Year’s Eve bashes. Cheers to a new year and to living life on your terms!

Alexandria’s Holiday Market

Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 23

Alexandria

If you want to experience real holiday cheer, the cobblestone streets and lights of downtown Alexandria make for an incredibly joyful weekend. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 22, Alexandria’s Holiday Market transforms into NoVa’s own North Pole. With sweet treats, traditional food, art and entertainment, this festival is everything we love about the holidays.

Georgetown GLOW

Dec. 2 – Jan. 1, 2017

Georgetown

It’s not quite December until you check out an amazing light show, and Georgetown GLOW will literally take your breath away. Every night (6 p.m. – 10 p.m.) through Jan. 1, the public can take a self-guided tour of some of the most innovative light installations you’ll ever see. No, seriously — here’s a video of some exhibits from last year. Grab a friend (and a camera), and Uber down to Georgetown for visually stunning art and a holiday environment unlike any other.

Downtown Holiday Market

Dec. 6 – 23, 2016

Penn Quarter

Ranked by “Travel Magazine” as one of the 20 Best Christmas Markets in the United States, this is absolutely one event you must visit if you’re a resident or visitor to the DC metro area. Calling this a market doesn’t quite do it justice, because this outdoor festival feels more like a heartwarming holiday village. The vendors — who serve up ethnically produced goods and unique stocking stuffers — rotate daily, so every day offers something different.

Holiday Getaway at National Harbor

Dec. 1 – Jan. 1, 2017

National Harbor

National Harbor hosts more seasonal events than you can shake a peppermint stick at, and we recommend spending a few days at Gaylord National Resort to take advantage of all of its holiday offerings. Spend a night at ICE! for an interactive attraction or take a ride on the wonderfully illuminated (and heated) Capital Wheel. A massive Christmas tree, light show and holiday music will great you after sunset, so make some time to enjoy a not-so-silent night at National Harbor this December.

New Year’s Eve in the Nation’s Capital

December 31 – January 1, 2016

Whether it’s a cruise along the Alexandria waterfront or an elegant evening at the hotel of your choice, you really can’t go wrong spending New Year’s Eve in DC. Most restaurants, concert halls, hotels and bars in the region host their own New Year’s Eve celebrations. Here are 10 ways to celebrate 2017 around the DMV.
